Rhode Island Oceanographic

It all begins with a passion. At Rhode Island Oceanographic (RIO), we have a passion for preserving and protecting the ocean and its inhabitants along the Rhode Island coastline. We believe in innovating and supporting pragmatic and sustainable solutions to solve serious issues facing our ocean and marine life. Our initiatives will have positive meaningful and lasting impact throughout the greater Northeast Region of the United States.

RIO is a registered 501c3 non profit organization

  • RIO leads initiatives that have a positive and measurable impact on the Rhode Island coastline

  • Each RIO initiative is carefully planned with very specific goals, milestones and timelines to measure impact

  • Fixing problems requires a pragmatic approach. Protecting the ocean and its species does not have to mean putting an end to fishing, recreation, or progress. RIO seeks, high impact, achievable and sustainable results that benefit the oceans, their inhabitants, and the surrounding communities livelihood and enjoyment.

Awareness is Crucial to Change and Success

If you knew your actions were causing the extinction of a species, permanent damage to a coveted area of the coastline, irreparable harm to an ecosystem, or affecting millions of migratory birds would you be open to changing your actions?

The truth about most of the major issues and problems facing the ocean and its inhabitants is the persistent but wrong idea that one must choose between the environment and human needs and businesses. At RIO we work to find solutions that work for both the marine environment and its inhabitants and human needs and businesses.

Our Approach

RIO’s approach to solving any coastal marine problems is pragmatic and uses an analytical approach. Working with stakeholders, RIO assesses the problem and its breadth, determines the root causes, investigates, innovates and sometimes invents a solution that will protect our ocean and its marine species and have a positive impact on the surrounding environments and businesses, livelihoods, and cultures.

The only way to truly eliminate a persistent threat is to offer a better solution and outcome than the current one causing the problem. At RIO, that is what we do.

RIO is the sole sponsor of The Horseshoe Crab Restoration Initiative.

At over 400 million years old the Horseshoe Crab is a “living fossil” and one of the only species that lived long before dinosaurs and still lives today.

They are one of the most biomedically important organisms in the world today. Compounds in their blood are used by pharmaceutical companies worldwide to guarantee that medicines and vaccines are safe for humans and animals.

The pharmaceutical industry currently captures and bleeds Horseshoe Crabs for their rare and extremely valuable blue blood. This and other factors have led to the species rapid demise.

RIO aims to restore the horseshoe crab population and provide a long term sustainable solution over the next 3-5 years through our Horseshoe Crab Restoration Initiative.
